Smooth sailing – Smart Yachting

There’s a well-known adage that says the best two days of any boat owner’s life are the day they buy their boat and the day they sell it. It’s a phrase that crops up in meetings between potential clients and Tim Hope, director of sales for Smart Yachting, but it’s also a saying he and his team disprove on a daily basis. The company’s ethos is all about maximising the days between these nautical milestones by taking all the hassle and stress out of sales, acquisitions, management and more. As far as clients of the successful yacht brokerage are concerned, it’s nothing but smooth sailing…

Launched in 2018 as a sister company to on-island charter agency Smart Charter Ibiza, the inspiration for Smart Yachting was two-fold. Firstly, the charter agency – founded by born and bred islanders Charlie Veale and Alessandra Grisoni in 2013 – was preparing to upgrade its fleet of 50 privately-owned charter boats by on-selling the existing portfolio and investing in newer vessels. Additionally, many of their loyal customers, particularly those who owned property in Ibiza, were ready to invest in boats of their own. “It was a natural evolution,” says Tim of the decision to launch a full-service yacht brokerage, complete with year-round maintenance and management.

Today, with Tim steering the ship, Smart Yachting has gone from strength to strength, now operating out of four locations: the main Smart Group HQ in Ibiza, the buzzing offices in Marina Botafoch, plus Puerto Banús on the Costa del Sol and Puerto Portals in Mallorca. The company’s signature ‘sale to sea’ turnkey service isn’t over once you’ve cracked a champagne bottle against your new boat’s hull – in fact, it’s just the beginning of your voyage, if you keep your yacht within its privately owned, in-house managed and meticulously maintained fleet.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to finding boats for Smart Yachting clients – each sale is different, just like every boat owner is unique. What does remain the same is the unwavering dedication Tim and his team (who collectively speak over ten languages) put towards finding the right boat for the right person – whether it’s a brand-new, straight-out-of-the-showroom superyacht or a second-hand 12-metre speedboat. “I love when any sale goes through, no matter how big or small,” says Tim. “In that moment, you can see it really is the happiest day of someone’s life. I love being part of that.”

Given that many boat prices are equal to and sometimes even higher than a luxury Ibiza villa, the process of acquiring a yacht, no matter how fun it may be, is also a serious business. Smart Yachting works alongside the very best marine lawyers and finance experts in Spain to help you devise the best way to manage your acquisition and its ongoing annual costs – and this is where Tim’s experience really puts the ‘Smart’ in Yachting. The company’s aftercare concept allows boat owners to offset ownership costs such as moorings, year-round maintenance, insurance, registration, services, off-season storage and more by renting their boat through Smart Charter Ibiza when they’re not enjoying it for personal use.

With Smart Charter Ibiza responsible for upwards of 2000 boat charters per year in Ibiza alone, Smart Yachting have all the facts and figures at their fingertips to show potential buyers just how lucrative their investment can be if it’s added to the fleet of summer rentals. “Boats are not easy animals to have,” laughs Tim, with just a hint of seriousness in his tone. “They require a lot of love and care, and constant maintenance – even when they’re not in the water. But you can easily recover these costs by chartering your yacht for just two months a year. Then, for the other ten months, it’s all yours!”

The Smart Yachting aftercare services include access to a full-time team of trusted in-house mechanics, captains, crew, painters, electricians, carpenters, and upholsterers – no matter how big or small a technical issue, custom refit or redesign is, it can all be taken care of onsite in the behemoth of a 2000-square-metre workshop. “We can fix things instantly if they go wrong,” says Tim. “There’s no waiting around for workmen or parts for weeks.” This cavernous space is filled with spare parts, paint, protective wrapping, a custom upholstery workshop, shelves lined with luxe towels and high-tech water sports equipment and aquatic toys such as Jet Skis, Seabobs, Foil Boards and Fly Boards. You name it, they’ve got it, and the workshop is whirring 12 months a year.

After the summer season, Smart Yachting switches into refit and repair mode – taking boats out of the water to give them a full overhaul – from cleaning daily with fresh water, changing oil, carrying out major services, running dehumidifiers in the interiors, applying products to stop corrosion and more. Owning a boat is a year-round commitment, even if you’re only using it for a couple of weeks per year. Knowing you have Tim’s experienced and trusted team in your corner takes the worry out of winter, when Smart Yachting can even ship your yacht anywhere you’d like to sail in the off-season, with the Caribbean currently a popular choice for many owners.

The genuine warmth, conviviality, and enthusiasm of the Smart Yachting team make it easy for first time buyers to sit down, have a chat, and get to know the ins and outs of buying a boat from the premier experts in the Balearics. Understanding that investing in a boat is a serious purchase, Tim and his team advise on the value of second-hand boats, take you on Facetime tours if you’re not on the island, fly to meet you in France if that’s where the right boat for sale happens to be, help facilitate the right deal (including moorings), and most importantly, manage your expectations. “It’s all about transparency,” says Tim.

Of course, there are also clients who are interested in buying a brand-new yacht strictly for personal use, and Smart Yachting is an official dealership for Canados Gladiator Yachts and Virtue Yachts in Spain in addition to boasting long-term relationships with all of the big-name yachting brands. “New boats are where we can really have some fun,” says Tim. “You want a DJ booth? A built-in bar? Custom upholstery? We can do it all.” As Ibiza’s HNW demographic continues to rise, Tim is seeing a demand for bigger boats each year. “The Balearics are an amazing place to be,” he continues. “There are so many people relocating here with great jobs, working remotely, or astute businesspeople who’ve spent the past 30 years knuckling down and now want to enjoy the fruits of their labour. These are exciting times.”

The 2024 season is looking even more exciting than ever for Smart Yachting. While the glamorous boats and interesting clients are part of what makes their jobs fun, it’s the people behind the scenes that truly make the brand shine. Whether they’re working out together in the in-house gym at HQ in the mornings, catching up over after-work drinks at the brand’s new office spaces, cocktail bar and café in Marina Botafoch, Mira Ibiza, rubbing shoulders with the stars at major international boat shows in Palma and Barcelona, or hosting weekly community padel matches with clients, colleagues, friends and family, it’s the authentic family vibes of the Smart Group that turn clients into lifelong friends.

A tapestry of tales – D Shop

The rich and storied history of Ibiza is woven into the fabric of its architecture, with a tapestry of tales waiting to be discovered in every finca, villa or home on the island. One such story is set within the rustic charm of an iconic 300-year-old farmhouse on the road to Santa Gertrudis – if the walls of D Shop could talk, they’d tell tales worthy of a Hollywood gossip columnist. Fortunately, for clients of Ibiza’s premier source of soft furnishings and upholstery fabrics, discretion has always been part of the service.

The finca – easily identified by its iconic triple-arched white façade and vivid pink Art Deco logo – has been an integral part of the island community for decades, but it was in 1979 when vibrant island personality Chiqui Uruñuela Zunzunegui took the helm that its story began to get more colourful, both literally and figuratively. Chiqui transformed the space into an interior design studio, working her creative magic on the very best homes in Ibiza. Around two decades years later, she handed the business to her equally fabulous daughter Paola Madurga de Uruñuela, who continued to build on her mother’s legacy.

Set within a 300-year-old Ibicencan farmhouse near Santa Gertrudis, D Shop is where sumptuous fabrics and cutting-edge design intertwine.

Fast forward another 25 years, and it became Paola’s turn to pass the design emporium’s baton – along with the legendary D Shop little black book – onto its newest creative custodians, British interior designer Kate Tilbury Cooke and her husband and business partner Damon (and their trusty assistant, Roxy, the island’s most fashionable canine). The pair, never shy of facing a challenge head-on, took over during the maelstrom that was 2020 and just four years later, this family-run business has masterfully taken the D Shop story into its next chapter, while maintaining its reputation as the go-to destination when it comes to Ibiza home design.

Kate’s background as an interior designer in London and New York equips her with the finesse to collaborate effectively with homeowners, architects, and designers alike. While her expertise and natural talent are a cornerstone of the D Shop philosophy, she attributes the store’s continued success and growth to her dedicated team and their commitment to personalised care and exceptional quality. “We do everything from start to finish,” she says. “From the first consultation to measuring, installation and all the detailed touches, including fabrication, which is all done here in Ibiza.”

Visitors to D Shop are invariably mesmerised by the extensive selection of fabric samples on display. Kate’s exquisite taste and discerning eye serve as the ideal guide through the treasure trove of textiles – a stunning variety of fine linens, sumptuous brocades, creamy velvets, vibrant prints, luxurious cashmere and more. “It’s a showroom more than anything else,” she says. “We have the largest selection of fabrics in Ibiza. At last count, there were over 180,000 samples and I’m constantly revising the collection.”

Integrating her own global outlook garnered from frequent travels, Kate is tuned into the desires of her clients and is seeing a slow movement away from the classic soft whites and creams synonymous with Ibiza’s aesthetic. “Off whites and linens will always be elegant but my eyes do light up when someone comes in looking for colour, pattern and a bit of wow factor.” In response, alongside D Shop‘s array of stunning neutrals, you’ll see bouclé in punchy mustards and golds, velvets in deep scarlets and blushing pinks and wools hand dyed in regal purples, washed blues and eye-catching prints.

New D Shop team member Lou Yellowlees shares a moment with Kate surrounded by a selection of the 180,000 fabric samples on offer.

Technological innovation has revolutionised the fabric industry, complemented by the D Shop team’s inventive spirit. Pertinent to Ibiza are the advancements in outdoor fabrics. “That’s been really interesting,” says Kate. “The new capabilities with outdoor fabrics are ground-breaking. Some of them are so good people are even using them inside as they resist mould and sun damage, which is often an issue on the island.” Boat grade netting is sewn into the underside of sunbed cushions for enhanced durability during unremitting summers. Motorised blinds are tailored with precision-matched materials for smooth operation and optimal sun defence. Polypropylene carpets mimic the look and feel of natural fibre but can be used outside and easily jet-washed.

Parallel to technological progress is the burgeoning industry-wide commitment to sustainability, a shift that has invigorated Kate and the D Shop team. “Many more eco fabrics are being produced,” she says. “I started with just a few sample books and now I have an entire rail, with many more coming soon. Almost all of our suppliers have launched eco-lines and they have a huge range of applications, from curtains and upholstery to voile and even blackout. They’re absolutely amazing.” Her current favourites include a recycled bouclé in earthy tones and recycled polyester Mallorquin print, versatile enough for both indoor and outdoor use.

A unique collection of hand-picked vintage Moroccan carpets, knotted wall hangings and original artwork complement the soft furnishings on offer.

While curtains, blinds and upholstery are the foundation of any home’s soft furnishings, D Shop also produces custom-made valances, headboards, cushions, wallpapers and a distinctive line of roll-up blinds made from natural materials. Just as their vast range of fabric samples differentiates them from other stores in Ibiza, so too does their collection of made-to-measure carpets, vintage Moroccan rugs and other exquisite items such as handcrafted, knotted wall hangings, opulent beach towels, and original artwork. Kate fosters a dynamic design community through sporadic pop-up collaborations with artisans and artists, both local and international, reinforcing D Shop’s reputation as a nexus of home design.

As the tale of D Shop is woven into the future, the iconic showroom is a place where the aesthetic of Ibiza is both preserved and pushed forward, where timeless elegance coexists with contemporary boldness. Kate and the team don’t simply follow trends, they set them – ensuring that every piece, from the smallest cushion to the largest rug, is delivered on time and with scrupulous attention to detail – transforming a house into a home. As the island begins to stir with the rumblings of an exciting new summer season ahead, now is the time to visit D Shop to infuse your Ibiza home with beauty, functionality, and a touch of the extraordinary.

All you need is love… and Marnosuite

Once upon a time in East Berlin, a little girl called Maria Simon spent her early childhood learning to play instruments, performing in the theatre, knitting jumpers, and painting her own cinematic interpretations of life and landscape – it’s amazing what a child can do (even if somewhat begrudgingly) in the absence of a television. Little did she know those formative years would shape her future as a photographer on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza.

Today, as the founder of Ibiza wedding photography and editorial brand Marnosuite, Maria instinctively channels the creativity that was instilled in her by her parents while capturing the real-life romance of island nuptials on camera. Using her lens as a paintbrush, her intuition as a guide, and her couples’ unique love stories as inspiration, she crafts a vividly romantic world within each and every photograph she takes. From behind the scenes and the all-important milestones to fleeting moments of spontaneity and the power of raw emotion, Maria’s ability to document every aspect of a wedding is unrivalled.

Ibiza-based wedding photographer Maria Simon is the island’s queen of hearts – a natural at capturing the romance, emotion and magic of special events on camera to be cherished forever.

“Painting played a big role in developing my visual style,” Maria says. “I began to photograph right after finishing school, and it was a heart-made decision to become a photographer.” Initially, she was drawn to the high-gloss world of fashion, inspired by the glamour and nostalgia of old Hollywood movies. Maria spent 10 years shooting editorials and portraits around the world, counting Lady Gaga, Jade Jagger and Craig David among her clients. During this time, a close friend asked Maria to photograph her wedding, piquing her interest in a world that felt more in line with her authentic spirit and ethereal style.

It was around a decade later that weddings would circle back into Maria’s orbit. She’d swapped the grey of Berlin for the technicolour of Ibiza in 2005, having fallen in love with the island on a holiday in 1992, visiting regularly ever since. “I always knew I wanted to live in Ibiza,” she says. “The island has a certain magic that no one can really explain, and it’s the only place I’ve ever found that gives me a sense of peace and calm. Here, I really recognise how simple yet beautiful life can be.” When the opportunity to shoot her first big Ibiza wedding came in 2008, Maria was primed to create magic. “By that time, I had a vision and had developed my personal artistic approach to wedding photography.”

Marnosuite (the brand) was born as a way to differentiate Maria’s wedding photography from her editorial work, however the two worlds inevitably intersect. “I definitely see elements of my fashion work in my wedding photography,” Maria explains. “The biggest difference with weddings is that I create in the moment. For a fashion editorial, I have a storyboard and time between shooting each look. Weddings are so intuitive – I never know what is going to evolve, I can only observe and let things flow. Of course, some couples have a vision for their photos and I can work with a concept, or guide them, if they are up for it. I just love the unpredictable nature of a wedding, the love story behind it, all the feelings and of course, the love!”

Part of the skill of being a successful wedding photographer is knowing how and when to be in the right place, at the right time – something Maria has honed well over the last 16 years. “On the day, I am very calm, relaxed and mostly blending into the event, unless my couples are looking for specific guidance. If I’m working with a very nervous bride, I can help calm her down and give her a lot of space. When I work with bigger weddings – for example when couples get ready in different locations – I’ll have a second photographer with me. I work with a network of talented people who understand the Marnosuite vision, and whose styles and work ethic resonate with my own.”

Love is definitely in the air today and for any newly betrothed couples planning a wedding in Ibiza, finding the right photographer like Marnosuite is equally as important as getting the right dress, rings and venue.

Her gentle yet assured nature means Maria is adept at working with all types of personalities – be it brides, grooms, mother-of-the-bride, groomsmen or children. At the same time, her innate eye for style means she captures settings and scenery like works of art. “One of my favourite things is seeing all the love and effort behind the gorgeous creations by some incredibly talented planners, stylists, florists and lighting pros,” she says. “What inspires me the most are the couples themselves. This is why getting to know them before the wedding is so important. I love the personal connection we create. I want to be more like a friend with a camera, so they feel completely comfortable. There are couples I am still in touch with a decade after the weddings and I really value that.”

Describing her Marnosuite work as classy, elegant, emotive, cinematic, dreamy and feminine, Maria often references fashion books, movies and magazines from the 60s and 70s rather than industry trends for inspiration. “Trends come and go,” she says. “Long term, it’s more important to refine your signature style as a photographer and stay true to it. I’ve always played with textures and filters, while staying true to natural colours. I’m drawn to timeless, nostalgic and documentary style imagery – less staged and perfectly imperfect. Life is so fast-paced these days, which is driving the current trend for ‘content creators’ and the use of AI but I think weddings are a celebration of love. People should be in the moment, not forced to stage content for the sake of it.”

The proof is in the pictures, and Maria’s portfolio shines with authenticity – couples besotted with one another, families coming together, friends dancing beneath the stars, and truly stunning Ibiza settings and landscapes. Flashes of floating gowns; the twinkle of thousands of fairy lights; the golden glint of sunlight through the treetops and the sparkle of the crystalline Mediterranean Sea – fairytales that came to life to be cherished forever in a photo. “It’s such an honour to be part of someone’s dream,” she says. “I am a hopeless romantic and I love that I can express this through my images and blend it with a fashionable and cinematic style. I want people to rest their eyes on an image and really feel the essence and the emotion of the moment.”

Maria’s work with Marnosuite can be seen in esteemed publications such as Harper Bazaar, Vogue, Elle , Marie Claire, Brides and L’Officiel, to name a few, and in keeping with her ultra-personalised approach, she limits the number of weddings she shoots each year to keep each event special. “I’ve captured a lot of dream weddings,” she says when asked to describe her own fantasy wedding scenario. “From a visual perspective, I love rustic, cosy weddings with a lot of fairy lights. I love floating dresses and lots of movement. It’s so much fun when the energy is high, the party starts, and everybody is dancing. My ultimate dream would be a 70s-inspired wedding with all the guests attending in vintage clothes.” And afterwards, of course, they’ll live happily ever after…

Global treasure trove – Casa Bedouin

Casa Bedouin is hard to miss, with an authentic Bedouin tent perched on its roof and its striking viridian green storefront beckoning like a tasteful beacon. Located on the road leading towards the sparkling waters of Cala Carbo beach on the south coast of Ibiza, this beautiful interior design store holds untold treasures within and without its walls. Founder Peter Fieret has poured 30 years of design experience into the charming space, filling it with an ever-evolving collection of antique and new furniture, exquisite art, and handmade homewares from across the globe.

As you step across the threshold, you may be lucky enough to be greeted by Isla, the furry sales assistant manning the Casa Bedouin floor. Don’t mind her laissez-faire attitude; she’s mostly there as the island’s best-styled dog and, after a yawn, will refer you to her beloved owner, Peter. It’s no coincidence that the various nooks and crannies of the store have the appearance of a glamorous movie set. Peter’s early days in the design industry were spent creating sets and vignettes for films, commercials, and fashion magazines.

Curated by Peter Fieret with a focus on originality, Casa Bedouin is an incredible source for unique and inspired furnishings, fabrics and homewares.

In addition to life on film, he honed his craft through dressing the windows of some of his native Holland’s most beloved department stores before moving on to design boutiques for brands such as Tommy Hilfiger among others. His skills and natural talents have evolved into a distinctive sense of colour, texture, form, and function. The essence of Ibiza is characterised by a harmonious coexistence with nature – an ethos that is beautifully embodied on the Casa Bedouin patio.

As a long-time visitor to Ibiza and a permanent resident since 2016, Peter understands that island life is lived differently. “Outdoor living is key in Ibiza,” he says. “Styling those areas of a home is a lot of fun.” At Casa Bedouin you’ll find an ever-changing stage providing endless inspiration. Think earthenware pots filled with juicy succulents, bamboo sunbeds scattered with cushions printed in bold colours and raffia parasols that shade vintage side tables set with whimsical vases. Inside, the vibe is more subdued but just as original.

With a list of contacts spanning decades and continents, Peter delivers a unique vision that blends vintage and antiques with current pieces, traversing cultures from Africa, Latin America, and Europe. Each handpicked item is placed just so, culminating in the store’s signature ambience, with a mood that is very homely, easy-going, and comfortable.  “My style could be described as surprisingly original,” he explains. Peter’s goal with Casa Bedouin is to create spaces that are chic as well as functional, with a message of contentment and tranquillity.

The floor at Casa Bedouin and the many private interior design projects Peter has executed allow a sense of charmed calmness. Every corner of your home is catered for, be it a modern sofa with an ottoman, tribal rugs, traditional and contemporary ceramics, retro tableware and artisanal scented candles, plush handmade lampshades and cushion covers. Each piece is a testament to Peter’s creativity, as vintage and modern fabrics are carefully blended, resulting in one-of-a-kind items. The diverse palette of colours, patterns, and textures ensures there’s something to complement every style.

Each perfectly styled corner, vignette and space at Casa Bedouin is a testament to Peter’s creativity, honed in the worlds of film and fashion.

Distinguishing itself from other interior design stores in Ibiza is the unique partnership Casa Bedouin boasts with a professional tailor located in the same building – an alliance that enables the creation of made-to-measure curtains and other home textiles. Simply choose your material from the exquisite selection of luxury fabrics downstairs, explain your vision – or collaborate with Peter on designing a bespoke look for your home – and let the expert team upstairs stitch your vision into reality.

An artist at heart, Peter has expanded his passion through a collaboration with an old friend who is a photographer by trade. Together they fashion mixed media images depicting details of Ibiza’s ancient traditions, printed onto linen and hung directly on the wall without frames; their ethereal essence and subdued colours are dreamlike and tinged with a gentle rusticity. Handmade and created with an insider’s love for the history of the island, the collection is growing slowly and will, in the future, become a staple part of the Casa Bedouin concept, complementing the store’s stunning collection of tribal art and sculptures.

Whether you’re looking for a complete home transformation, want to breathe new life into a single room or are seeking a statement piece to complement your existing style, you’ll find it within the walls of Casa Bedouin.

Peter, a seasoned interior designer, is also a trusted partner for residential and commercial projects, whether you’re planning a comprehensive home transformation, a room refresh, or simply need to find a special piece to add that final finesse to an office space. His passion for his craft not only radiates within the confines of his remarkable showroom but also defines his design philosophy, where creativity is infused with both joy and professionalism. Exploring Casa Bedouin uncovers an authentic and spirited aesthetic, where every corner reflects Peter’s flair for transforming spaces into genuine works of art.

A year-round Ibiza sanctuary – Can Vistabella

There’s a secret hidden within the lush, forested hills of Benimussa near San Antonio. It’s a discreet and tranquil location scattered with luxury bungalows, comfy chill-outs, meandering stone pathways and a pristine swimming pool, where the murmur of gentle laughter and lyrical birdsong fill the air. This is Can Vistabella, one of Ibiza’s most serene and quietly luxurious places to stay all year round. With just 15 exquisite dwellings dotted across the property, its clever design makes you feel as though you are part of a private club and judging by the long list of guests who return time after time, it’s a secret that won’t stay under wraps for much longer.

Most of the abodes at Can Vistabella accommodate up to four guests, with two studios that are ideal for couples. Each of the spaces are unique, decorated using materials, colours, and textures inspired by the Ibiza landscape. Terracotta tiled floors, Sabina-beamed ceilings, and whitewashed walls pay homage to the traditional Ibiza farmhouse, while luxe linens, tasselled cushions, and mirrors sourced from Ibiza’s artisanal markets reflect the island’s artistic spirit. Kitchenettes for late-night snacking along with fireplaces and underfloor heating make the resort an inviting winter escape – sunny by day, and cosy by night.

Brimming with laid-back Ibiza soul, Can Vistabella is hidden among the Benimussa hills, where love, care and attention is at the core of every stay.

Developed under the meticulous and passionate eye of manager Zuzana FlorekovaCan Vistabella has grown from a campground to a luxury boutique hotel in just four years. Completely self-trained, the Slovakian-born hospitality expert possesses a natural affinity for creating exquisite spaces and delivering exemplary service and was struck by the site’s beauty and potential when she first laid eyes on it in 2019. “I remember standing in the middle of it, closing my eyes, and it just appeared to me,” Zuzana says. “I could envision the houses, imagine people chilling by the pool. I could see exactly what it was destined to become.”

Though not part of her original job spec, Zuzana was entrusted with the décor for each of the bungalows, taking her cues from the owners’ exceptional taste and innate sense of style. Working with her highly refined intuition, she envisaged each area at Can Vistabella as a sanctuary, leaving nothing to afterthought. “I put myself in the position of a guest, and wondered how I would use the space,” she explains. “Every room has its own story,” she says. “The owners and I were completely on the same page. We believed everything should be kept simple, but beautiful.” The rustic stonework, wood beams, and fresh style synonymous with Ibiza’s heritage are anathema to over-decoration, requiring a sense of natural order and effortlessness.

The pretty pool at Can Vistabella sits within a stone patio surrounded by the forest, while chill-outs and courtyards dotted among bougainvillea and hibiscus plants are perfect for seeking respite from the midday heat in summer or soaking up the mild rays of winter sunshine. Relax with a book in the hammocks beneath the wooden cabana, take a siesta on any one of the perfectly placed oversized cushions or wander the labyrinthine paths between the residences, immersing yourself in nature. “It’s the details that really make the difference,” Zuzana says, and she’s right – no element has been overlooked.

This ethos extends to every component of the Can Vistabella experience, something Zuzana takes great pride in. “I make myself available to guests whenever they need me,” she says. “We take a personal approach with everyone because all guests need something different. Some want everything booked in advance, others have kids to occupy, and special touches go a long way – we always take notice of what matters.” Clients often comment on the fact that Zuzana is never seen without a smile on her face and is always available for their requests. “That’s my number one rule,” she says.

Manager Zuzana Florekova is dedicated to ensuring each and every guest experiences the stay of a lifetime. This extends to designing and decorating each of the spaces, with an innate understanding of guests’ needs.

A complimentary concierge service is part and parcel of the Can Vistabella experience. No request is too big or small – from private transfers and restaurant reservations to daily excursions and activities, everything is taken care of. “Anything our guests need, we can arrange it,” Zuzana says. “The beauty of the hotel is that you have plenty of space and privacy, but if you need anything, you just have to ask.” Those wanting to take refuge away from the island’s hustle and bustle can take indulge in twice-daily yoga sessions, a massage and pampering area hidden among the trees, and twilight cinema screenings three times a week.

Foodies, too, will relish the offerings at Essència Ibiza, the in-house restaurant at Can Vistabella – also open all year round to guests and visitors. Accomplished chef Francisco Moreno has curated an inspired menu, ranging from classic Spanish snacks such as traditional croquetas, sliced jamón, and more by day, to decadent dinner dishes that traverse global tastebuds by night. Starters include Korean lamb saam served in crispy lettuce leaves; flambéed mackerel with wakame seaweed and beetroot, almond and fennel hummus, while mains included hearty Thai yellow curry, presa Ibérica done Japanese-style; plus squid with Lebanese samke hara tahini sauce, white beans, sobrasada, and crispy tapioca. Families will be happy to note there’s a great kids’ menu too.

Highly accomplished chef Francisco Moreno spearheads Essènica Ibiza, the in-house restaurant at Can Vistabella that is also open to the public.

Thanks to Zuzana’s unwavering dedication to crafting a truly special island retreat, Can Vistabella is infused with heart and soul. “We want to make people feel so at home that when they leave, they’re immediately thinking about coming back,” she says. This commitment is evident in glowing feedback and an ever-growing list of loyal clients that includes a couple who visited for the first time in spring 2023 and returned four subsequent times throughout the summer. A peaceful haven in winter and summer alike, ideally located for exploring the best the island has to offer, Can Vistabella remains one of the island’s hidden gems but it won’t be long before the secret is out.

Quiet by design – Cas Gasi

Checking in to Cas Gasi feels just like arriving home. The family-run, luxurious boutique hotel in the heart of Santa Gertrudis has been open all year round since 1998 and is the perfect place to surrender to serenity, tune into the natural rhythms of the island and embrace a slower pace this winter. The secret to its captivating sense of cosiness and comfort is authenticity and sustainability – this is a destination that is truly one-of-a-kind, having evolved and grown alongside the tastes of its owners and loyal guests over the decades to become the cherished destination it is today.

Many say that a stay at Cas Gasi feels like visiting the home of a well travelled, curious and creative friend. A testament to the eye, style and character of owner Margaret Von Korff, the hotel’s ethos is ‘quiet by design’, and its aim is to promote deep relaxation and create an Ibiza experience like no other. Step through the front doors to be greeted by a warm and welcoming team – including Margaret’s children Vera and Luis – and discover the elegantly bohemian communal spaces that include a plush living area complete with a toasty open fire, beautifully designed coffee tables piled high with an eclectic selection of books, and intriguing artworks lining the walls.

Luxurious boutique hotel Cas Gasi is located in the verdant and peaceful Santa Gertrudis countryside, where a slower pace of life is enjoyed.

Cas Gasi embodied the notion of quiet luxury long before the term became a trend. Each of its 18 suites are lavish and yet homely, decked with quality fixtures, high-end bedding, Design Guild fabrics and handpicked antiques from across the world – no two rooms are alike. Elevating the luxury levels are two standalone Ibizan Palaces, designed in homage to Belgian architect Philippe Rotthier, whose book, Ibiza, Le Palais Paysan, so beautifully describes the traditional Ibicencan architecture. Sleeping up to six guests and boasting total privacy and luxury, the standalone dwellings are ideal for families or groups of friends looking to create unforgettable memories together.

You’ll never find crowds at Cas Gasi – here, guests are encouraged to transition to tranquillity at their own pace, surrounded by nature. Repeat customers have become lifelong friends as the hotel has emerged as more than just a destination, but a way of life. In fact, Margaret and her family have watched generations of guests grow up over the years – from young couples in love, to young families, and now, in a full circle moment, the children of those families visiting with their own partners. It can feel like time stands still here – it’s easy to forget about the before and after, and just enjoy living in the moment.

Whether for a weekend away, a week of vacation, a month-long sojourn or a seasonal retreat, Cas Gasi is where you can feel inspired to do everything and nothing all at once. You may feel inspired to finally write your novel, screenplay or even a business plan; you might simply prefer to spend your days in the sun reading books from the upstairs library – expertly curated over 20 years – and nights watching films. It’s a place where you can nourish your health and wellbeing, while nurturing your soul – be that with wholesome cuisine and yoga or by simply immersing yourself in the flow of winter life in Ibiza.

Start your mornings against a backdrop of beauty with a gentle stroll in the ‘silent garden’ where only the sweet sound of birdsong floats across the airwaves – the hotel’s dedication to promoting eco-conscious systems that put nature first hasn’t wavered in over 20 years. Find balance by taking part in daily morning yoga sessions or spend time in the deeply serene spa, where an array of beauty and body treatments can be arranged. Swim laps against the jet stream in the indoor swimming pool (heated by photovoltaic panels), try your hand at cold-water immersion in the beautiful outdoor pool or while away the hours in the relaxing suntraps across the enchanting Cas Gasi grounds.

This stylish and soothing home-away-from-home is a place to switch off and tune into the island and all its natural beauty.

Away from the hotel’s whitewashed walls, verdant gardens and tranquil ambience, the sun-drenched winter in Ibiza awaits. In the off-season, there are many activities to take part in: guided countryside or seaside walks, creative and colourful markets, sunset rituals, a unique restaurant scene and much more – a refreshing side of Ibiza that is far removed from the buzzing crowds and fast-paced reputation of summer. Speaking of restaurants, you don’t need to stray further than Cas Gasi’s own backyard to discover some of the finest cuisine on the island, either at the beautiful Garden Café, which serves lunch and snacks throughout the day, or at .more. by Cas Gasi, the beautiful evening fine dining restaurant – both also open to the public.

Dining right in the heart of the garden or beneath centuries-old olive trees, a feeling of connection is palpable – connection to the produce, to the earth from which it came, and to those with whom you are sharing your precious mealtimes. Much of the produce served comes directly from the Cas Gasi organic gardens – a regenerative agriculture project using the no-dig system, pioneered by British horticulturalist Charles Dowding, to keep the ecosystem beneath the soil flourishing. The proof is served up on a plate – artfully presented dishes that sing with the flavours of the Mediterranean.

For over 25 years, through thick and thin, Cas Gasi has remained loyal to its roots – marrying an ecological sensibility to exceptional service within an idyllic country location. The team’s dedication and attention to detail is second to none, creating a tranquil, laid-back environment where going with the flow feels like second nature, and blissfully warm days segue into cosy nights. A stay at Cas Gasi is a restorative escape from daily life that feeds the soul for months to come – start with a winter stay, and it won’t be long until you’re a summer visitor too.

New Year’s Walk + Healthy Brunch at The Olive Ibiza

10.30am – Saturday January 06, 2024

Wrap up the holiday week at stylish new venue, The Olive Boutique Hotel & Spa in Cala Llonga, where the friendly concierge team hosts a New Year’s Walk + Healthy Brunch on Saturday January 06, 2024 at 10.30am. Meet up at the hotel, then follow the leisurely guided trail through the surrounding campo for around two hours, alongside the gorgeous Roca Llisa golf course, and all the way along to the stunning cove of Cala Olivera for a rest on the beach before returning to the hotel. Once you’re back and refreshed, enjoy a delicious two-course brunch featuring fresh juice, followed by seasonal fruits with yoghurt, honey and granola, and your choice of either salmon, eggs, or portobello mushroom with vegan cheese, all served with cherry tomato and rocket salad plus artisan bread and washed down some well-deserved mimosas.
